I just wanted to do a quick write up on the proper leash to use when walking a dog.
When asked, i let my clients know that I prefer a 4 foot dog leash. 4 feet, thats too short some say.
No, it is perefect and this is why…
In most cases, when a dog is on a walk, it is for exercise. How much exercise is a dog going to get if its on a long line sniffing and smelling everything? When it is allowed to go in the bushes, around trees, on the track of any smell it encounters. When you are untangling the leash from under the dogs leg every 5 minutes.
With a shorter leash, the dog walker has more control of the dog. The dog is next to the dog walker and they are walking together. The dog cant follow the smells and cant “mark” everything it wants to. The walk has now turned into a walk.
About halfway through the dog walk, it is perfectly fine to stop and let the dog take a break to sniff and potty. But then get back to the walk.
This will tire your dog out physically and mentally making it much happier and more tired! Your dog will respect you as its leader and after a feww weeks of structured walks, your dog will be better behaved.
Let me know if you have any questions. I can teach you how to walk your dog properly for $10.
