As a Seattle dog walker, I obviously walk a lot of dogs. I use a regular nylon 4 foot leash, which works perfect for me. Leather and cotton are  fine too.

They are thick and durable and keep the dog close.

Some people use retractable leashes. I do not like these as they can be dangerous.

no

If you have to have a retractable leash, please make sure it is not a cord one, but tape. And make sure its shorter and not 10 feet of freedom for your dog.

Flexi,has this disclaimer

“To avoid the risk of eye or face injury and cuts, burns, and amputations to your body or the body of another person from the leash cord/tape or all belt and hook, (sic) read and follow these Warnings and Directions for Use before using your Flexi leash.”

and on their website, http://www.flexiusa.com/operation/safety-advice.php  it gives warnings that the leashes can cause finger amputations, fractures, skin burns and cuts, danger to bystanders, danger to other dogs and face and eye injuries when the leashes break.

I would really advise against using any retractable leash as they can be very dangerous. This Seattle pet sitter is sticking to good old fashion nylon dog leashes!
